Hidden Gems in McKinney, TX: Local Places Worth Discovering

Beyond the Square: Discover More of What Makes McKinney Special
Rachael Hill  |  September 12, 2026

McKinney is well known for its charming Historic Downtown, but there’s much more to discover beyond the obvious favorites. From peaceful outdoor spaces to local restaurants, shops and neighborhood destinations, some of the best parts of McKinney are the places you might not find on a typical visitor’s list.

If you're considering moving to McKinney—or you already call it home—here are a few hidden gems worth exploring.

Adriatica Village

With European-inspired architecture, waterfront views, restaurants and walking paths, Adriatica Village feels completely different from almost anywhere else in North Texas. It’s a great spot for an evening stroll, dinner or simply enjoying the scenery.

Towne Lake Recreation Area

Close to Historic Downtown McKinney, Towne Lake offers trails, green space, a lake and plenty of room to get outside. It’s an easy escape when you want some fresh air without traveling far from home.

Chestnut Square Historic Village

For a glimpse into McKinney's history, Chestnut Square is a unique collection of historic buildings near Downtown McKinney. It also hosts community events and the popular McKinney Farmers Market.

Erwin Park

If you prefer something a little more outdoorsy, Erwin Park offers wooded trails and open spaces away from the busier parts of the city. It’s one of those McKinney spots that can make you forget you're in the middle of a rapidly growing North Texas area.

Explore McKinney Like a Local

One of the things I love about McKinney is the variety. You can enjoy historic Downtown McKinney, established neighborhoods with mature trees, newer master-planned communities and plenty of parks and outdoor spaces—all within the same city.

And if you're thinking about buying or selling a home in McKinney, knowing the individual neighborhoods and lifestyle around them can make a huge difference.
